Goal #1: By the end of the term I would like to have blueprinted and created an exam or quiz
I believe that as a teacher being able to create exam/ quizzes and mapping the questions out is vitally important. By taking the time to complete these tasks we are able to ensure that we are hitting different levels of learning and understanding. Often times test can cover the same level of understanding in questions, as teachers we want to avoid this from occurring because it is hard to full assess the different area of understand without the higher levels of learning. As teachers we may find questions online but having the ability to but the questions together in a sequence is really important and something I want to work at getting better at. Goal #2: By the end of the year I want to have at least 4 times incorporated activities/tasks that are not typical to a math classroom or have incorporated concepts learnt in other classes and those related to the students day-to-day lives. It is important to have diverse lessons within the classroom so that students have find ways which they may prefer to learn. Along with also providing students with different ways that they can look at particular topics. I believe this is important because all students are different and will learn in different ways, and as a teacher I need to take that into considerations student learning needs. I believe it is also important to incorporate ideas that are cross circular and applicable to so that students are able to make those connections. I also think that incorporating these day-to-day concepts is important as well because the student is able to recall information to a stronger degree if they can relate to it. I was able to achieve this goal throughout my practicum. While I was teaching my grade 7 math class, I utilized a story to introduce adding integers but also incorporated role play into this activity so that the students were able to participate and act out the story themselves and get involved. A second activity that related to the students day-to-day lives was through looking at the time differences around the world and how this would affect us if we were making a call. By incorporating this I was able to connect with the students through the idea that if we needed to call a family member of friend in a different place around the world, and that we may need to take into consideration the time differences. Another activity that I incorporated that got the students up and not at their desk the whole time was during our Patterns and Expressions unit where they needed to find their match. Each student was given a strip of paper with other a mathematical expression, english expressions, terms, or a definition. Their goal in this activity was to find the correct match within a time limit. I believe this is important to address because it got the students interacting and working with concepts that we had just discussed. Through this activity they also had to make sure that everyone had a match so they also needed to use some reasoning. The fourth activity was through getting my students to create posters. In math we usually just talk about a concept and then do a bunch of practice problems. So I decided that I would give my student the task of needing to create a poster that communicated adding and subtracting integers to someone who had no idea how to do this. This activity I believe is beneficial because it allows those students who learn better through these types of writing hand on activities. I also believe that in math having an activity like this where they have to teach someone gives them that responsibility and they are more likely to take the ownership, in their own learning. If you are able to explain a concept that you are also more likely to retain it in your mind for a longer period of time. |
